West Portal was named for its proximity to the west entrance of the Twin Peaks Tunnel. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Davidson, West Portal’s real estate is made up primarily of single family homes. Here you’ll find the rarest of creatures: front and back yards. This makes West Portal a great neighborhood to raise kids.
Merchants are centered along the tree-lined West Portal Avenue. At one end is an entrance to the Muni underground, taking residents directly to downtown San Francisco. As you stroll through the neighborhood, you’ll find several old school restaurants like the Café for All Seasons, Old Krakow Polish Restaurant, French Village Café, Manor Coffee Shop and Shaw’s Candy. Add to this list several newcomers, including Squat and Gobble, Mozzarella di Bufala, and Peruvian cuisine at Fresca.
Stop in for a movie at CineArts’ Empire Cinema or a drink at West Portal Station (formerly the Philosophers Club). If that’s not enough, Stonestown Galleria and Stern Grove are right around the corner. Even though West Portal has a small-town feel, it has all the amenities of a modern, urban neighborhood.
